Lupine seeds

marciaz3 Tropical 3 Northwestern OntarioNovember 7, 2010

I harvested some stalks quite awhile ago - just cut them down and put them into a paper bag. Today i got around to opening the pods and found some small light brown seeds. They don't look like the lupine seeds i'm used to seeing. The pods were all grey and fuzzy when i cut them so it doesn't seem as if they would be immature. But maybe they are?

It's possible they might not be fertilized or not mature. But I have seen different colours and sizes in lupine seeds and they germinated. You could always nick a couple now and test them for germination.

Good idea, Gil. I have some of what i think are rudbeckia seeds too, so was thinking about starting a couple just to see. Thanks!

I found the best time to harvest Lupine seeds is when the pods are brown and dry. They don't seem to ripen well in the pod if cut too early.

Beegood, they were grey and fuzzy, so that's too early? I've gotten seeds from them before but i don't remember the condition of the pods. I'll try sprouting some just to see. If they don't grow, there's always next year!
