Digging deer

beegood_gwDecember 30, 2013

They are digging all over my lily and iris beds. If I sprinkled blood meal on the snow would that scare them off ?

I can't say, but when I read your post, it occurred to me that the deer would need a bobcat or something to do any digging here!

Once they get a food source they dig for, there isn't a lot that will scare them off.

If you have something like pieces of firewood or fence posts you can lay on the area they are working over--a mechanical obstacle might make them look else where.

We secure a large sheet of plastic over our carrot rows in the fall. They don't like the sound, texture and nature of crinkling, crackling plastic to figure out. Other wise they plow the ground and get every carrot if we let them have their way.

That's what happened to our swiss chard. No plowing - they just at the whole row! At least i didn't have to can any of it. LOL

My asparagus patch gets splattered with about anything I can throw on in the fall,...like tomato cages, barb wire, some stucko wire mesh used for climbing beans, some farm fence wire loops, used for trees, etc.

Chewing the patch stalk down to the ground wouldn't harm much but a slow winter kill is better, it gets nutrient back into the plant and production is better next season.
I'll end up heaving more dead stalks rototilling into the ground come spring.
