Is my ivy dead?

david1978jpApril 5, 2005

I am in Louisiana. In my backyard, wild ivy always comes back after winter. Last summer we received a potted ivy, and I left it out for winter, it was a very mild winter; it died back. But now, it is still not coming up, I pulled it out of pot, all roots are brown, did it die? Does it still have a chance?

I'd water and keep an eye on it...just may put up a new shoot from within the rootball where there may still be a spark of life.

Not all ivies are hardy. I'm assuming yours is a variety of Hedera helix but the same is true of most plants...if I'm not sure of hardiness I take a few cuttings and pot inside until I'm sure the outside plant will survive. Good luck. josh

David, anything's possible with Ivy..Remove all dead foliage, and start feeding w/a high nitrogen fertilizer. You can start w/half the recommended dossage. Keep in brightly lit area, in cool location. (if kept indoors) Toni
