2 crops of summer veggies

julieann_growMarch 5, 2007

I'm in Zone 9 and don't see why I can't get 2 crops of my favorite "summer" veggies: squash, cukes, beans, tomatoes. I know they all pretty much stop setting fruit in July/Aug and by that time are used up or pretty ragged.

I thought I could just put seeds or transplants out at mid-July so they could grow through the heat but not be ready to set fruit until Sept at which time in starts to cool off a bit.

Has anyone done this?

Julieann, I have gotten at least 2 crops most years, but I don't put too many in the ground; i.e. tomaties, eggplant, peppers, etc. go in Large pots with a large water reservoir at the bottom. That way, if we get a tropical storm or worse, I can move them under cover and hope for the best.
Big Lots here in the Jacksonville area had very large pots with a huge water reservoir that I'm real excited to find. Scarfed up all they had. These are much more mobile for me than having a bunch of large containers hooked to drip irrigation. Works for me :)
Good luck with your second crops!
