indoor gardening through the winter

Holy vegetables, I have taken on quite a load this year!!! I do not own any plant lights. I just have the entire southern side of our home almost completely windows.

Attempting to grow:

Tiny Tim tomatoes (sprouted)

Spacemaster cucumbers (sprouted)

Sweet basil (sprouted)

Little finger carrots (sprouted)

Spinach (sprouted)


A dwarf banana tree (bought it at about 4in above soil. Now 9in above. Had it about 4 weeks)

2 dwarf black cherry tree's (bought pre grown)

everbearing strawberries (still wintering over in my freezer)

Iceberg lettuce (waiting on seeds)

Issai baby kiwi (waiting on seeds)

Paris island romaine

Mini red bell peppers


Anyone have any growing advice? I'm a first year gardener!

I'm right there with you. Instead of overwintering, I am using windows and lights to keep the harvest going with my perennials. Currently, I am having great success with growing Juliet tomatoes from seed. This will be my first year too.

I am trying to get started up this weekend. I have a fairytale eggplant that I thought was dead, but am going to bring it in today as I saw some life to it, lol! Not sure if this will do any good or not :^P

going to seed up some basil and parsley for window sill.

Am considering doing some tomato - pepper - cukes in my room just using the windows - they frame the corner, facing s and w so pretty good. With a wee bit of whatever they get from the very poor lighting in the room. They may start putting out in Feb or so when the days are getting a bit longer again.

Thinking about leafy stuff in the kitchen - or heartier stuff in the mudroom - non heated but enclosed.

Not sure how far to go on this.......

Last year - I made a huge mess putting industrial shelves in my parlor for the windows, then adding a bunch of shop lights when the sun dipped behind the house next door. It was not attractive, and a big pain and scratched my hardwood floors. I need a heated and an unheated greenhouse, oh and an acre or two to boot!
