Has any one planted...Got to have me some..Gurney Seed, What do think of it? We were disapointed..not much flavor
Where are you located? Climate matters for picking varieties that do well.
Keep in mind that this was my first year gardening and I did not grow corn. I may try next year.
A theme I have found in reading these forums is that some of the commercial hybrid corn that is available over the last few years has focused on super-sweet, unnaturally sweet corn, rather than an overall good corn flavor with the usual amount of sweetness.
My yardstick is if I need no salt or butter to enjoy it.
Is Gurney a specific corn variety? If not which variety did you grow?
I grew a small patch of sweet corn this year (~150 sq feet). The corn grew well...that is, the corn that the squirrels, opossum, and racoons let get to maturity. The ones that did produce pollen and ears (2 fat ears per stalk) were wiped out by worms and squirrels (those furry little monsters actually climbed the corn stalks to eat the ears).
Didn't get to taste one ear.

Here is a link that might be useful: Raccoons
No need to worry about coons...There are 4 bluetick coon hounds in a kennel about 150ft away
