Pruning garden plant fuchsia

charleshx(10b)November 25, 2013

I pruned back my plant in Sept when it grew to over 7 foot high and stopped flowering but its started to flower again in the middle of Nov. When and how should I prune back again for the winter. Pls note zone 10b, southern Calif San Clemente about 2 blocks from the Pac Ocean.

Eek! What kind of Fuchsia is this? It's obviously very vigorous! A lot of people are tempted to prune Fuchsia at the beginning of winter, as that is when it begins to look untidy. In relatively mild areas like yours, however, it's a lot better to wait until spring, because you can then see how far up the new growth is coming. This advice does not apply in very cold areas where all the top growth is killed by frost. In these areas it is better to cut them right back to the ground about now. Good luck. - Ian.
