Gardenia repotting

bunyipMarch 13, 2014

I have a very large potted gardenia which is at least 20 years old. It has been repotted at intervals over the years and has always been happy. Now, it is about 4 feet across and three feet in height, and I cannot move it without the assistance of a strong man. The gardenia and I have had several discussions about the impossibility of a larger pot, but now we have arrived at the point where it is either a larger pot or a root pruning. Or ????

What can I do? Would it be enough to give it fresh soil and a light root trimming and put it back in its current pot, or should I do a complete root prune (which I don't know how to do and which will probably kill my gorgeous plant)?

Any advice would be very welcome!
