Gardenia cultivars

jbcarr(7 VA)May 27, 2005

I have a new bed where I am thinking about placing some gardenias. I will be ~ 8-10 hours of sun in the summer. My questions are three fold: Is that too much sun for my zone? I have heard they get less white fly problems in full sun, but I have some "first love" in a part shade situation, and they seem to bloom fine (although the white flies love them). What are your favorite cultivars for bloom and health? We have sandy soil, which I hear they like. Do I need to get grafted plants? Thanks

Hi - i have no clue as to the actual name of my gardenias - we call them "Linda Gardenias" b/c they started from plants my Mama rooted back before she died.

However, i wanted you to see a pic (2003) of a gardenia that i planted in 1998 in full sun and it has taken off. They LAID down last year, they were so heavy with blooms

Don't necessarily know about the whiteflies either - i have them pretty bad - but i think it is b/c my bed is overgrown with daylilies...so they are gonna be thinned & transplanted this fall...I do not however

Here is a link that might be useful: My gardenias - full sun
