pruning a michelia alba

jgchow(z9 CA)May 4, 2013

I've had a michelia alba in a container for about 2 years and is now about 7 feet tall and quite leggy. There is healthy growth at the end of the branches with a fair number of buds, but there are at least 5 -10 yellow leaves closer to the main trunk that drop each day. The container is east facing and I fertilize with osmocote and fish emulsion. Should I prune the plant to achieve fuller growth? I wasn't sure if this is the right time, and how much to remove. Will I hurt the plant if I remove the entire top section? I'm worried that if I prune too severly I will kill the plant!

I don't know about you, but I would look up videos on air layering and try that. Since m. Alba is so hard to propagate, you might as well, right? That way, you can make yours more shapely and have another plant if all goes well.
