First time with cabbage & broccoli, hardiness advice needed

squirrellypete(z7b AL)February 27, 2013

Okee doke, last week I planted out cabbage and broccoli transplants that I have been growing from seed and hardening off. Low temps for us this weekend are now expected to be 24 on Sat with snow possible and 22 on Sunday. I know they tolerate frosts and sub-freezing temps but not sure just how sub-freezing. Should I cover either or both of these for those two nights? Cold weather crops are very foreign to me!

Thanks for any input.

Since your plants are young, I would cover the plants and the area with an old sheet and then a piece of plastic on top of it. It can be floating. Remove when it gets warmer during the day, dry off the sheet and plastic and return. I just weigh down with a rock or a brick.
This works really well. It will insulate at least 4 degrees, possibly more and keep the frost off, which can brown and burn the younger leaves.
