I'm not having good luck in zone 8 but PNW zone 8 is cold and cloudy for much of the year.

Humm.

I have one in a pot and it doesn't seem to like cooler weather. It freezes in time and does not do a thing until the warmer humid weather rolls in.

I am just glad it's alive and green anyway. The buds on this one have been there since last December and now that is getting brighter and warmer, they are starting to swell.

Gardenias are tropical plants and will not do well in cold zones. The most cold hardy ones are Kleim's Hardy, Chuck Hayes and Frost Proof but you will need to keep these evergreen plants indoors during the winter months. They can withstand temperatures only down to 10 degrees thru 0 degrees but.... just for short periods of time.
