Fragrant Sumac

cu_gardenerJune 19, 2006

Hello All,

I recently discovered fragrant sumac in my garden. Since I am trying to develop a bird-friendly garden, I am thinking about keeping it, even though it is growing in some undesirable places. Can anyone tell me their experience with this plant? Do the birds really benefit from it? Do you enjoy its appearance once mature?

Any advice? Thank you!

I don't grow it, and I haven't found the leaves all that fragrant, but I've heard it's a pretty reliable, easy groundcover, and won't take over the entire garden in a season.

The brooklyn botanical gardens puts out some great handbooks, one of which is on bird gardening, with lots of suggestions depending on what area you're gardening in.

Hope this helps!
