gardenia mealybugs in Northwest

giovanna(8PNW)July 3, 2006

On my new gardenia, I am having white fluffy icky substances on the nodes of stems and sometimes buds. sometimes when I scrape them off, a scaly like, sticky thing comes with it..... And little black gnat like things flying around the plant, which is indoors at the proper temp, in south window, not overwatered. I scrape them off every morning, but some of the big buds are coming off. Does this just need spraying with water? Insecticidal soap was mentioned. Is this a nursery item? This is my first gardenia. Thanks anyone,.

Dab at the mealybugs with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab.

If you have fungus gnats that generally means you are over watering or it was overwatered previously.

You can put your Gardenia outside for the summer, partial shade and it will be thrilled.
