Growing lavender in SW Ohio

lisamkJuly 1, 2014

My nephew is allowing me to use a 1acre section of his farm to garden. I'm thinking of planting it with lavender. I have a very low budget, so I was thinking of starting the plants from seeds and directly sowing them. I was going to plant the seeds in mounds, so I can keep the plants from rotting. (The ground is not very sandy and the humidity can be high at times.) So not the best circumstances. I was hoping to sell the lavender after each harvest, but not sure what the best method of that would be either. Any advice? Thanks in advance!!!

Lavender seed is notoriously difficult to start. Before you buy a bunch of seed, try experimenting with a small batch first. I have tried to grow lavender from seed many times and have never been successful.
