plant ID?

merkityJune 11, 2014

hi - I have sort of inherited this plant. not sure what it is. it has purple flowers on taller stalks that are cone-ish shaped. its not in bloom yet this year, so i don't have pic of the photos, but maybe someone help identify by the leaves...

It's a Streptocarpus. It is in the Gesneriaceae family(the Gesneriads). As such, it is closely related to the African Violet.

i was starting to think so, looking at the other photos here, but this is the first one i have ever seen before ( I have had the plant for a couple years now) i basically ignore it where its at, and it seems to be happy enough - flowers each summer.

Yeah, definitely a Streptocarpus.
It's looking good, by the way!

If you want it to flower more, try cutting off the spent flowers. These babies can flower for months on end!

it does need a trim :) wasn't kidding when i said i ignored it. i watered it just enough to keep it alive mostly as an afterthought - apparently it loved it. it should flower soon i think - maybe i will check it for buds and trim it up a bit this weekend.

That's the way to treat a streptocarpus - water just enough to keep it alive. I learnt that the hard way :P
Keep up the good work!

My streps bloom all the time. Yours looks like it really needs to be divided. I don't let mine dry out, but their crowns like to be a little elevated, so I pot them higher in the center than at the edge. I treat mine pretty much like my african violets. I love my streps.

i was looking at it a bit closer - there are several crowns in the pot and new flowers on the way. I think i will leave it alone for now - its happy as is.

Very pretty! But it might be good to remove the dead leaves so it doesn't get a mold or mildew problem!
