Sinningia incarnata

costaricafincaJuly 9, 2012

I recently 'found' two plants growing in the wild in an empty lot, beside our home in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

I can't find much info on what to do with them after the blooms have finished. Any help or information would be appreciated/

Also info on seeds.

Have a look a this site- there will be recommendations on soil mix and what not. When it is not in bloom, you leave it in a pot and not water until it shows new growth.

Good Luck

Thank you. I had read the info on the site, but have found that this one, Gesneriad Society offers lots of good information and help.

Yep - that's the way to go - as well to gesneriads.ca

I just want to make the point that it is very hard to find species specific advice. Even genus specific advice is very valuable - but so Mauro Peixoto site (brazilplants.com) is great because he gives the description of the Sinnigia incarnata - habitat, soil, size, etc. So it is probably the best you can find on S. incarnata. There is another site - I put a link - but it doesn't have too much on S. incarnata. Alan tried to grow it - and it didn't do well for him in his conditions.

Good Luck

irina, thanks! I have now four more plants that I removed from along the fence line, growing on the same empty lot and where local workers were burning off the weeds...
At the moment all are still in pots, as we are possibly moving soon.
The local hummingbirds are sure enjoying the blooms.
