What gingers can I grow in San Diego?

lucas2March 6, 2012

Hi, I live in San Diego, zone 10a. I am wanting to try some Ginger but don't know anything about them. I currently grow a whole lot of stuff so I would perfer low maintenance. I also live on a hill and wind is bad in winter, I read that it can be a concern. Thank you.

You can grow a lot of them! White Butterfly ginger is a nice and fragrant one! Keep it in a lot of sun and the winds might beat it up a bit in the winter time, but it will grow back with some warm summer weather (they die back completely to the ground here, but come back and bloom with fragrant white flowers in late summer/early fall.
Alphinas should do well also, I have seen them at the San Diego Zoo.
