Avocado tree for zone 9b?

fagopher(zone 5)May 29, 2009

Hi All,

I lost a few trees last winter including a new Brogdon avocado I planted right before the freezes...

I would like to try the avocado again but not if it is going to die again in next couple of years... I know mine was too young and did not have time to set roots (plus the winter was really hard..) so I would like to know if anybody in zone 9b can share your experience with the avocados. Would you still recommend to try it?

Thanks in advance for your input!!!

Hi,

I live in Oakland and we have a Brogdon and it is doing fine. It was planted about two years ago and it survived the freeze well. In fact, it was never even covered. It is a good tasting variety. I sampled it before I bought the tree. Here is a picture I took yesterday.
