Mystery annual i.d. help needed

squirrellypete(z7b AL)May 12, 2009

I bought this last year at Home Depot and it was just labeled "annual". Loved it but alas forgot to take cuttings before winter. Haven't been able to find it again so I thought I'd test your know-how. Annuals aren't really my strongsuit.

Sorry it's not so close-up. I'm trying to figure out what the taller plant in the back of the watering can is. It has shiny green leaves, sometimes with hints of purple and the flower itself is an upright stalk with small purple blooms. I thought maybe angelonia I saw in the store today could be it but looking at my pic from last year I don't think so.

Any help is appreciated! Danielle

it looks like a Salvia to me. Salvia mexicana 'Compton's?

that's my best guess. the shoots and flowers look like Salvia Splendens, but not the leaves.

you may try the 'guess that plant' forum here at GW.

it's really tought to tell with such small pictures though

Thanks for the tip Satellite. I'll try there if no luck here.

Maybe you're onto something in the Salvia category. I'm not sure it's Compton's, but the leaf looks like it may be similar and the overall form is alot closer than what I had been looking at in my previous searches.

Sincerely, Danielle

Yay!!! I think you got it scmatlanta & GGG. I didn't have a clue. Thanks to everyone else for their input as well. I'll put this in my notes, and maybe I can find it from seed or order it somewhere if not locally grown.

Thanks so much, mystery solved. Sincerely, Danielle
