Cross pollination of gourds and pumpkins?

halecardsFebruary 26, 2011

Can gourds and pumpkins cross pollinate? Also, I've heard that when pumpkins do cross pollinate, they still look like a pumpkin and have all the pumpkin features but then you can't save the seeds out of a pumpkin that had been cross pollinated. Is this true? Thanks!!

Yes most gourds and Jack o'Lantern pumpkins are the same species, C pepo.

The cross pollinated pumpkin will still be a pumpkin. The outer fruit is part of the mother plant, and the seeds are the result of cross polination and will give rise to mixed plants the next year. I do not know if the seeds will be edible, I seem to remember that gourd seeds are bitter and so the crossed seeds may be too.
