Do the "warts" on many cucurbits have any adaptive advantage?

Are there any known or suspected causes or reasons for these sometimes overwhelming traits?

Not That I know of. They are selected in some varieties for decorative purposes.

I was wondering that too (when I was getting stuck by them!).
I'm thinking that its to keep animals from eating them until the seeds inside are totally mature enough to produce offspring.
That's my guess.
