shady grass?

rouge21_gw(5)February 11, 2012

I have no experience with ornamental grasses but I have been doing lots of investigating during the 'off season' looking for grasses which can succeed in shade.

All of these look wonderful and have been described as (quite?) shade tolerant:

Hakonechloa macra 'Fubuki'

Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold'

Carex 'Ice Dance'

Chasmanthium 'River Mist'

But now I need your experience. Have you had success with any of these grasses in a 'shady' location?

I grow all 4 of them, and they do beautifully, as do many other Hakones and Carex varieties. I'm in a much warmer zone than you, and you're near the bottom of the hardiness range for Hakone, but it should work if you site it well.

I planted half dozen Ice Dance about 10 months ago and they have remained evergreen all winter. I have them with some Hostas and Coral Bells and they look great and established nicely in the shade. I am going to get some more this spring.

Your 'Ice Dance' will probably start sending out offsets this Spring. They'll pop up several inches from the mother plants, and are easy to move to wherever you want them.

Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' is one of my favorite plants for shade.
