Help wth White Pampas Grass

stonato(z6a - Toronto)March 2, 2005

I wanted to grow some of this between me and my neighbor for privacy. I understand it can get quite tall. I got a hold of some last Sept and decided to direct sow. Does anyone think it would have made it through the winter (z6a)? I have some more and was thinking to wintersow it. I understand you can then just place the whole loaf of seedlings in the preferred spot.

I appreciate any help!

oh and one more thing...I just heard that the leaves on this grass are 'razor sharp'. Actually had a big bold warning on Floridata.com. I have young kids...should I avoid this grass?

Although this grass is apparently more hardy than the references would indicate, I'd be skeptical about growing it from direct-sown seed in what would be considered a less than ideal climate. And should you get successful germination, you might want to consider winter protection. And yes, the blades have very sharp edges - it is not a very people-friendly plant - and it should be sited well away from walkways and high traffic areas.
