Any ideas?

new_grower(6)March 14, 2005

I was given an ornamental grass several years ago but I have no idea what it is and I haven't seen it anywhere. Last year it grew to about 5' tall, it's dark green with upright growth. At the end of each "stalk" are 6-8 grass blades that give it the appearance of a star w/ tiny white "flowers" in the middle. Sorry, I know this is vague. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Perhaps a Cyperus species?

I will concur with jean001 your description reads like your grass may be a Cyperus.

I agree with Jake and Jean001. If you live near a good garden center that carries water plants, go in and look around sometime and I bet you'll be able to positively identify what you have. Cyperus (umbrella palm or papyrus) comes in all different sizes, from miniature to giant, so you might find it in a different size, but at least you'll know for sure what it is.
