Splitbeard bluestem - anyone grow this?

georgia_transplant(7b)March 2, 2008

I have a very sunny spot to fill, and I like the look of splitbeard bluestem. I read a little about it on a USDA website and it sounds like another lovely hard-to-kill native OG. I want to plant it next to oakleaf hydrangea and prairie dropseed.

I did a search of the forum and only got one hit for it - is it just hard to find or is it problematic in any way? Anyone in zone 8 try growing it?

Thanks for your help!!

It says here that your bluestem prefers hot, dry sites and poor soil. Not a good complement to any hydrangea that cannot run out of water. I suspect the bluestem will grow taller than normal, and be more floppy.
