Ants on my Plants

kajaJune 4, 2010

I've got three of those 6-pod Topsy Turvey thingies that I'm using to grow my vegetables and some herbs. I've got three tomatoes, bell peppers, and tomatillos.

I noticed today that there are a lot of very little ants crawling around on my plants. They're mostly crawling around on the branches and a few are on the leaves.

Is this anything to worry about? Should I be doing something about the ants?

Thanks everyone!

Check your plants for aphids. A lot of the time the ants are attracted to the "honeydew" produced by the aphids. Also check the soil just to make sure they have not decided that your nice lovely potting mixture in a good place to build a nest or mound. If they are fire ants then you will want to get rid of them asap! Ouch...

I do not believe they're fire ants. The ants actually look like the little sugar ants I see inside from time to time.

I have actually looked for aphids but I have not seen any. Of course, this doesn't mean there aren't any. It just means I haven't noticed them.

I'll definitely take a closer look again tomorrow.
