astrachan apples?

writersblockMay 5, 2014

I've been reading Harriet Beecher Stowe's book about her life in Mandarin, FL back around 1870, and she makes several references to people growing astrachan apples. When I went and looked them up, a couple of websites mentioned that they were once recommended for FL back when they were a common variety.

Has anyone here ever tried them?

(BTW, she also says they used hawthorn as rootstock back then.)

Writersblock, sorry I have no apple info, but I do want to know more about the Stowe book(s) and I don't see "send me an email" appearing GW listing. My library system (Pinellas) has several books by Stowe encompassing her Florida experiences. Do you recommend any in particular, or to be read in any particular order? Thanks. Irma

Hi, irma_st_pete. The one I was reading is "Palmetto Leaves". If your library doesn't have it you can get a digital copy on gutenberg.org. I think it's the first one, since a lot of it deals with getting used to FL and Floridians.

Never tried them, but after reading the search results, now I'm intrigued as wellâ¦.

Here is a link that might be useful: Red Astrachan: google search results
