after they bloom, then what?

sann777July 19, 2010

My daylilies are bloomed out except for just a few. What does everybody do after they bloom? Do you pull off brown foliage? Do you trim them back? If you trim them, please tell me how much. I'm always a little scared to do much. I need some advice. They are really messy looking....Sarah

I usually don't do anything with the foliage. I just cut off the dead scapes and throw them on the compost pile.

I cut off the dead scapes from near the bottom and if I have energy I cut any brown foliage off too.

I clean up the plants. Pull off any brown leaves, cut scapes and immediately order new ones for next year or go to the auction and bid on new ones:) It will cheer you up.

What all of you do is exactly what I do. But now, my attention turns to those 'other' perennials in the yard...lol! And see what kind of deals I can get in the greenhouses trying to get rid of their stock. And...expanding some beds to make way for more daylilies (and hostas, my two addictions)!

I also keep an eye on my seed pods too. The possible new babies!
