Questions About Blue Fescue & Fountain Grass

NhaMoiApril 28, 2005

Hello,

What's the best way to prune/cut these types of grasses?

Here's a pic of the blue fescue in our yard:

Blue Fescue. Should I trim or let it grow? Is that even blue fescue? I've seen blue fescue elsewhere that actually looks "blue."

And here's a pic of the fountain grass:

Fountain Grass. Are they like that this time of the year? My mother-in-law told me I should cut it all the way back. Should I do that? And when do I expect to see new growth.

Thanks for any help,

NM

Cut the fountain grass back to about 2 inches from the soil, since it is a younger plant. Older plants over the years develop a bigger crown, so prune lower if possible. The fescue as you call it just needs some manicuring, for instance cutting the seedheads of and the old and damaged blades.

The Fescue can be given a haircut now and the new growth should be blue.
I haven't had much luck with Fountain grasses so I can't offer any advice.

You know, its been bugging me, and usually with a question about the fescue makes me want to find the answer to indetification, I believe your "Fescue" is a Sesleria cultivar......the seed heads finally gave me an idea.....
