mastino(7)June 16, 2010

I guess something is cutting off the blooms before the pumpkin has time to form but I dont know what? Iv seen it happen on some of my yellow squash also. I dont think its a squash bug so I thought Id ask you guys!

They are probably male flowers. As far as i know the male flowers come out first fall off and then the female flowers will show up. The female flowers will have a little tiny fruit underneath the flower and wont fall off.

Here is a quick way to see male from female.

Thanks! Thatrs exactly what it is. I have them in raised beds in rich composed horse manure. I pick the bugs off daily & make sure they have plenty of water so Iv gone to allot of trouble raising these guys! I should have tons of winter squash from the looks of all the female flowers :)
Thanks again!
