more interesting alternative to Northwind Switch Grass

hilarycMay 3, 2013

I'd like to plant a row of grasses on the green median strip between the sidewalk and street in front of our house to provide a screen. Northwind switch grass is the form and height I'm looking for, but is not very interesting. Prairie Fire and Shenendoah are more interesting, but shorter than we want. Can anyone suggest another grass that is 5' or more tall, takes full sun, and can be drought tolerant once established? We're looking for something upright rather than vase-shaped and fairly tidy. We have several Karl Foersters and Overdams in other locations, so want something a little different. I'm in Boise, ID, zone 6b.

It will be difficult or impossible to find a grass as tall and as upright as 'Northwind.' It is, by far, my favorite switch grass, because of its erect habit and the way it holds its blooms inside the tops of the foliage.
