Growing pumpkins vertically - secondary roots

acorn922July 15, 2014

I'm growing pumpkins vertically this year and several secondary roots have formed. A few are a couple of inches long.
Will they continue to grow until they reach the dirt if they're kept moist?
I wrapped some stubby ones in a paper towel with dirt inside, but they grew and busted through!
How can I take advantage of the extra roots?

Thanks!

I have never had roots coming out in the air. I would think that you can cut it off and plant it. A new plant seems to grow fruits quite well. I let my squash set roots on the ground and it gives me more and more fruits. I don't think that if I just had one set of original roots and one long vine, it would be that productive.
