Best groundcover option

blackbear1973July 17, 2013

Hello all, looking for a groundcover for the attached pic. In the shade for the most part, I would like something low-maintenance that looks great. have heard clovers are a good option...any thoughts? In Canada zone 5

Look at a combination of Geranium macrorhizum (Big Root Geranium) and Epimedium sulphureum. Handsome and semi evergreen even in your zone, I think. Both very low maintenance.

Clovers need sun. The lowest maintenance-type plants are evergreen - look at Japanese spurge (Pachysandra terminalis), periwinkle (Vinca minor), dead nettle (Lamium maculatum) or many types of epimediums, referred to above.

Lily of the Valley is tough and fairly shade tolerant.
