Do grasses harbor ticks?

violetwestJune 9, 2014

Hi there. First post in the Ornamental Grasses forum. I live in the desert Southwest, Zone 7. We have a lot of wind so grasses would seem a good fit for my yards. We have native grasses like blue grama, and I'm also considering other hardy ornamentals like pink muhly (so pretty!).

But I've had people tell me not to plant grasses as they harbor ticks. Is this true?

Grasses, like any dense foliage plants, can harbor ticks. They tend, however, to be unpopular with ticks because the things don't like sunny dry locations.

Check with your state or county natural resources or extension people to see if ticks are a problem in your area, and act accordingly.

we're certainly sunny and dry here. Good idea on checking with the county extension -- I will.
