Best grasses to mix with flowering perennials

yutopia(6B)June 22, 2014

Anyone have any particular mixes of grasses and perennials that they really love?

I'm planning a new bed and I'd love to know what works together in your experience. I'm in zone 6, Pittsburgh, PA.

My fav is dwarf fountain grass. Perfect size to mix in beds. Stays nice and neat and adds softness to the beds.

Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' or Carex buchanii 'Red Rooster' next to Sedum 'Autumn Joy' works for me! :~)

If a shady to partly shady spot, the aforementioned Hakonechloa "aureola" as well as River Oats are nice. River Oats have a bamboo-like appearance.

In the sun, the fountain grasses mentioned above as well as Pink Muhley, which has some of the most beautiful flowers of any grass and fine blades. Prairie dropseed is another great choice, with fine textured leaves and compact form. For your area, dropseed would be hard to beat.

Fast growing dwarf fountain grass Pennisetum a. 'Cassian' is pretty with sedum. I have sedum 'Carl' (left) and sedum 'Xenox' (right) flanking it.

Over winter the center died out of 'Cassian' but it went ahead and filled back in pretty well this summer. Otherwise it would be even fuller.

Two years ago, when I planted it, I posted a pic and someone on this forum said, 'That 'Cassian' will own that corner' and, no kidding, it sure does ;-)
