Help-New at this-What are male & female blooms

carolsappraisalsJuly 25, 2007

I am new to this. I have saved and planted, kind of late, gourd seeds. I also planted white pumpkin seeds, which did not apear to be coming up so my husband planted more orange seed there. What do male and female blooms look like? Like I said, I am new to this garden thing. I am just a city girl who loves pumpkins and have started working with gourds.

A male flower is usually on the end of a stalk and upright. The female flower is lower down and will have an immature fruit already on it with the flower attatched to the end. If that fruit is not fertilized it will shrivel and die. They are very easy to tell apart.

male: no immature fruit, upright
female: small immature fruit, lower to ground

I'm not an expert so maybe someone will disagree, but that's the way it is as far as I know it.

Here is a nice little picture I stumbled across on google. This is what wild forager is talking about, the female is on the left and the male on the right.
