Can you spray paint pompas grass plumes?

butterfly4uJune 4, 2009

I know you probably think this is crazy, but I saw on an online nursery that they have pink pampas grass plumes.

I have the regular pampas grass.

When it sends up its plumes this fall, can I spray paint the plumes pink with some kind of non toxic spray paint?

Do you think it would look silly?

Don't they spray paint dogs at groomers sometimes?

That paint must be non toxic.

OK just let me know if you think it would be silly or not.

I am silly sometimes so I sort of need a sane sounding board.

Oh brother, donn. It is definitely NOT silly. In fact it is frequently done by professional landscapers and is gorgeous. I don't know what type of paint they use but I have seen gold and silver spray painted pampas grass for the holidays. I myself have done red with ordinary spray paint after the grass is dead. I am sure the live plumes could be painted too, especially if you just sprayed it lightly. I might try it myself, it's a great idea. See attached picture.

Spray painting clumps the plumes together and they look stiff and plastic.

Try dipping them into or spraying them with a strong solution of fabric dye.
