New groundcover

gcotterl(9)September 9, 2006

I live in Riverside, California -- mid-way between Los Angeles and Palm Springs -- where the summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees.

In the front of my house, I have a 30' by 20' garden containing about a dozen roses and other shrubs.

Years ago, I planted gazanias as a groundcover but they now unattractively thin, lanking and gangly.

I'd like to replace the gazanias with an attractive groundcover that flowers more-or-less continuously.

What are good candidates?

I love sedum as a groundcover.

I would suggest looking around where you live and find what you are looking for already growing, then finding it in a local nursery. Does iceplant do well where you live? In the mountains they grow kinnickinnick, which has glossy green leaves and spreads slowly. It would flower only a little in spring.
