WANTED: Help with home heating decision

coop27October 5, 2010

Can someone help me? I will be building a 1250 sq. ft. home in the Roscommon area in spring 2011. Only options for heating are propane or electric. I know nothing about either, since I now use gas heat. Does anyone know what the monthly heating bill would be, approximately, in the winter months in MI, for electric vs. propane heat?

I appreciate any help/advice anyone can give me. Thanks...

All things being equal, electric will cost more than LP.

The best way to get a good price on LP is to buy a tank- that way you can shop around. If you rent a tank you can only have it filled by the company that owns it, you're stuck with whatever price they feel like charging.

Expect to pay around $1/gal. tank capacity for a used tank. An LP tank can pay for itself in one year, which is a lot more than can be said for a lot of investments.
