What the..? Oh Cool!

I went out to polinate my gourds last nite since it seems there's an extreme lack of insects around here to do it for me... And I found something a little strange.

It's s'posed to be a female dipper gourd.. Doesn't really look like one huh.

That's because it's a hermaphrodite.

Closer:

I polinated it.. Dunno if anything will happen or not.

The past 5 or 6 nites I've gone out there I've found the same thing.. The vine's small still so it's only been throwing 1 or 2 female flowers a nite... All have been like this, and so far none have 'taken' the polination. Maybe they're sterile, maybe I'm not "doing it right", if that's possible I don't know.

I managed to polinate 2 normal flowers early on & they're developing fruit- WHich is what I wanted to do so the rest is gravy. Maybe next year I'll plant them earlier & have a better chance of lots of gourds.. But as late as I was 2 are good enough for me this year. My bushel is HUGE- but only 1 cantalope sized fruit so far. Sigh. No others have 'taken'.

Found some round luffa seeds- not the long ones- round ones like a lemon at Native Seeds Search but again, planted them Way too late.

Next year. Hopefully.

Sounds like you've been well tested at the "gourd school of 'trial and error'" We all are tested at one point or another.
