Do these gourds have a chance?

lovemygourdsAugust 24, 2006

I'm growing my gourds on a cattle panel. I have seven lovely very large martin house gourds. Something has been eating off all the leaves of the plants, leaving the vines. We set a live trap and caught 2 ground hogs and a possum. Today I actually saw the ground hog that is doing the damage-- climbed the arch of the cattle panel! This one is avoiding the trap.

Sadly, the vines are beginning to turn brown. Is this too early for these gourds-- do they have any chance of survival? Any suggestions for what I should do?

I would hope your gourds have a chance. You'll just have to leave them on the vine to find out. Let us know what happens.

Wow, I didn't know ground hogs would do that! Our dogs killed one earlier this year, it was living under our house. I have a large gourd arch built out of cattle panels also. I know there are other ground hogs around but none have bothered my garden, yet. I'm sorry, I don't have any good ideas except a big dog..........
