Not sure where to begin?

Our front garden beds (3 feet deep by length of property which escapes me at moment -- I want to say 50 so they are about 20 a piece) are horrible this year. Between squirrels and my husband, the plants are just awful and everything is out of place.

I'd like to plant grass there and go in that direction with the front. I absolutely love purple fountain grass. But what other plants/flowers would be suitable to go with it? I would love to be able to look at photos or have ideas before I head to the nursery. I'm looking for grasses that will last through the fall. My plan/idea is to have like a fall-ish type theme -- grasses, mums and some cabbages durng the fall and then the grasses and some shorter plants the rest of the year. But because the gardens are at the front of the yard, I can't have anything above a few feet. I'd probably say 4' is my max height (except on the corners, that I can go higher).

Input would be appreciated!
