I wanted to plant a vine maple in my wooded hillside acre in northern Illinois because of its size; that it supposedly grows well in disturbed soil; and it grows well in the shade of a 'canopy' of larger trees. But since I'm zone 5 it doesn't appear hardy enough. The Douglas Maple is suggested as the next closest to the characteristics I'm looking for....but since neither are 'native' as compared to other varieties...I'm wondering if there is a better choice. Any suggestions?

Acer circinatum grows (or used to grow) in the Dominion Arboretum in Ottawa, Ontario, so it should be hardy enough in northern Illinois.

What about striped maple or blue beech? They're both lovely small trees and native to the Great Lakes region.
