First time pumpkin grower questions

mamagradener(7b)August 15, 2013

Hi, My Daughter and i had a great success growing pumpkins for the first time this year. There is 8 of them soon to be more. Some of them are turning orange and haven't grown really in three days. I tried to puncture them with my finger nail but it doesn't even make a dent. Should i leave them on the vine longer to turn more orange or should i cut them. i would like to have them for halloween for jack o lanterns. I also have new female flowers about to open and i would like to get more if i can. I read the plant will die if i don't harvest them when the pumpkins are ripe, is this true?
i also have a bad case of powdery mildew but still have tons of healthy looking leaves. Trying the milk remedy with not much luck but i started late in the game.
Thanks so much, if it wasn't for all the people on this website i would not have been so successful !!!

I usually leave mine on the vine for a bit but once they start to turn color and pass the fingernail test you can pick them any time and they'll continue to ripen

Okay thanks so much for your reply planetes :) I am leaving them on the vine until they are very orange. I just hope it doesn't kill the plant because i have a ton of new little pumpkins starting to grow !
