Perennial fountain grass

momfor2August 14, 2008

We have white patches in our grass which our landscaper said came from the fountain grass throwing seed. The lawn mover just shredded it at the top leaving the white patches/spots. The grass below the shredded tops is fine. We like the fountain grass and don't want to dig it up. If we cut off the tip(which I am guessing is where the seeds come from)will that solve the problem? We started off with one white patch and now we have about 10 going in a row up one side of our driveway. I am a novice at this so any advice you have would be good. The landscaper could not give me a firm answer. We have not noticed this problem in anyone else's yard. The plants are about 4 years old now and healthy looking.

if you cut off the seed heads (plumes) that will stop it from seeding. That will stop the problem but your fountain grass won't be as pretty without plumes. Why don't you just pull out the fountain grass in your yard?

I can't figure out how fountain grass would create white spots in your lawn. I have fountain grasses growing in my front and back yard and have not had any problems with white spots.
