Canada WIld Rye

mary_maxAugust 11, 2013

I believe this was seeding like crazy in my garden beds and I have been tearing it out thinking it was a weed. Now I see a picture of what it looks so much like and its call Canada Wild Rye. Is this a grass that I might want to keep in my garden. Perhaps if yes, then I should cut the seed heads off before they go all over. I do love the look but like I said just thought it was a weed. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks so much.

Elymus canadensis is a great grass, if you can stay on top of the self-seeding habit. It works perfectly in a meadow garden, but in a well-cultivated border or bed, will volunteer freely. Birds love the seeds, but also will spread the seeds. It's lovely in cut flower arrangements.

You'll have to decide if the good features overcome the downsides.

Seeing the mess I had the last few years I decided I will not grow it. I am just now recovering from all the reseeding. It sowed EVERYWHERE! I just assumed it was a weed that I thought was a grass. :) Thanks for your help.
