Lilac Tree and Bush has bark peeling/Fungus

bfknot2May 2, 2013

Hello, Does anyone know what is wrong with my Lilac Tree, and bush? The bark has a fungus on it, and the bark is peeling. There are dead branches that get no leaves or flowers. I noticed that last year. This year the same is happening. Only this year, I noticed that my Lilac Bush is also getting the same thing. What is it, and what can I do to save them? Or should I cut them down and save the rest of my lilacs on the property? Thank you for any help in this matter.

The 'fungus' is actually lichen. Completely harmless and completely unrelated to the die-back.

There are many things that can cause a lilac to die-back. In your case, large mature stems of common lilac are particularly susceptible to lilac borer. Stressed trees are also more susceptible to the much salt does your DOT put on that road behind the lilac?
