Hedge ideas for clay soils, exposed site with strong winds, zone

jane_gMay 8, 2007

We have recently moved into a new home and have constructed a patio. I would like to plant a privacy hedge around the patio and am looking for ideas. Our home is quite exposed, it sits on a hill and there are very strong north-west winds blasting at the patio area. We have clay soils with a lot of small rocks.... not fun. I don't like arborvitae because they seem to split with our heavy snowfalls. I was thinking about some sort of cedar... or maybe privet (even though I think it might actually be considered invasive here in Michigan).

Thank you in advance :)

Hollies? Yews? I assume you want evergreens maybe sone of the hardier rhodadendrons?
how high do you want your hedge to grow?
a planting of viburniums might make you happy or some of the other shrubs that are hardy
