Why is it bad to plant pumpkins and potatoes near each other?

I just read that pumpkins and potatoes shouldn't be planted near each other.

Only reason I can think of is that pumpkins are huge plants that would completely over run potatoes both Irish and sweet. Irish potatoes and pumpkins don't share the same growing season here.
